How to shrink your jeans in four easy ways. Try it; you may find them smaller before you know it!!

In the old days—the 1950’s my family washed cotton items but hung to clothes on a clothes line.  I learned that cotton denim does shrink to a certain degree.

You can find out how much by searching Google It is best to wait when you first buy your jeans until your new jeans get to know you.

Later you can make the decision to use these different ways to shrink your pair of Jeans if they are too large.  Just remember!

Jeans do not make you skinny

The spray and soak way—an easy way too.

Fill a spray bottle–any bottle will do if you can spray without dripping it all over the place.  The cork that held the bottle was too loose and I got a nice little shower.

“Use a fabric softener”, not one of the fabric sheets but the one with the liquid softener.      Put three parts water and one part of the liquid fabric softener.

This can be done with  the 501 Levi jeans or any jeans that are too large.

I like to use the dark Woolite for the dark jeans, but I have nothing to substantiate my opinions about the best fabric softener to use. Use your better judgment.

The three parts water and one part fabric softener go into one spray bottle and do a little dance to shake well.   But the directions are not quite over;  shake it, shake it well.  Of course with the top on.

And just forget about adding detergent.  Okay?   We are talking about shrinking your jeans; not washing them.

Spray the part of your jeans you want to shrink.  Then soak the area you want to shrink using your diluted fabric softener.

Two words–Spray and Soak.  Take your time.  I think of ‘soak’ as one would think of as a pair of diapers or sponge.  Really more than wet, right?

Spray lightly at first is to start it off.  Use your judgment here also.  If you need to shrink the area a lot in inches, you can always do it again.

It is like once, twice and three times a charm.  Please, make sure the entire part of the area is completely soaked. Wiki says the word, “douse”  the area.                                         shrinking belly

I like this way when the waist is not tight enough.  It has begun to stretch out way too much.  Spray the waistband in front and in back–all the way around in fact.

Careful now, we are still talking about the combined softener with the water solution. because this way is really helpful if the waistband has begun to stretch out.

Again, make sure the waist is completely soaked with the water and softener combination.   There is a reminder to go slowly to shrink the waist as much as you need; not more.

This way works with the top part of the jeans need to shrink a little too.

Now put, throw or pass your jeans in the dryer.  With my dryer, I have to go and turn it around on high periodically to keep it  on the highest setting possible.

I think it helps to know the workings of your dryer, but if you have to go to the laundry mat, their dryers usually stay hot for a longer time.  It is the way of the dryer.

“Remember to use the most intense settings possible.”                                                 dry in hot heat to shrinkThe high heat should cause the soaked jeans to shrink.    I was thinking waist but anywhere you have sprayed and soaked the area will need watching.

Be serious–that is the way to be.  You must be sure to take out your jeans as soon as they are dry.

Air drying will not work.   It is the wrong way.   I use the heat cycle.   I always thought air drying was the way to go on a beautiful breezy day.   What do you think?

Repeat as needed.   If the area does not shrink as much as you would like in your judgment the way to do it is spray and soak the area again.

The short way to remember this is to spray, soak and apply more of your fabric softener solution and try and try again.

Combinations of words help me remember; spray, soak and apply/dry. ==================================================
The Way of the Bath

That should do it.  If you do not like this way, the next way is to do the hot bathtub solution.  Aha, this is a way to do it and at the same time have a restful way.

I like to read and reading in the bathtub even with your jeans should make your muscles relax and the jeans to shrink.

Here is what to do and if you like to soak in the bath tub, then this is the way to go.  It also is the one to use if you are not planning to go anywhere.

Why?  Because you want your dream jeans to dry while on your body and before you take them off.

  1. if you need your entire jeans to shrink.  Maybe read a little and drink some tea or coffee.  If you want to snack in the tub, be careful to get your jeans soaked.
  2. Fill the bathtub with very hot water; at least as hot as you can stand it.
  3. keep testing the water.  Just with brushing your hand through the water.   Too hot?  Well, you know what to do.  But when you do add some cool water, keep adjusting to see that it will be hot when you go in the tub.
  4. Carefully slide in the tub or stand in it and slide in slowly.  Remember it is hot.
  5. Stay in the bathtub for at least 20 minutes.  Keep adding some hot water if it gets too cold.   This might be a way to lose some weight. Ya think?
  6. When you get out of the bathtub, dry off just a little.   Enough so you do not ruin the carpet or slip on the floor.
  7. Go outside if it is a sunny day.   Sit on a plastic chair, not one of the cushion chairs.

When sitting or lying down, move around so that your jeans dry at the same time.

If you have to do it in the house.  Sit on a plastic chair or just walk around as little as possible.

If you have just the top part of your jeans to dry, try this next method.  Now it is more dangerous to get yourself burned, so pay attention to the directions.

Buy!  I think I will go and take a long bath now.  The little girl says after your jeans are dry.  “You look nice and the jeans look good on you.    sweet smiling girl

The Boiling Way

1.   Turn your jeans inside-out.  That is an expression all of us is familiar with when told you can not put your arm through your sleeve.

Or, in this case, to turn your jeans inside-out.  Doing it this way with the jeans inside-out will prepare the jeans to soak correctly.      (accessed from the website  http://www,wikihow.com:  Creative-Commons August 13, 2016)

This step is especially necessary if shrinking new jeans with a fairly dark wash.   If working with a pair of light wash jeans or an old pair of jeans that have already faded, you might not need to turn your jeans inside-out and can skip this step.

But if you want to be completely sure turn the pair inside out.

2.  Boil water 3/4 full in a large stockpot and get a pair of tongs to lift your jeans up and to lift the jeans in the boiling water.

Fill the large stockpot of water halfway to three-quarters full of ordinary tap water.   Set it on the stove and bring it up to a full, rolling boil using high heat.

The pot needs to be full enough to immerse the jeans.                                                                                           cauldron-161102_640-1

3,   “Dunk your jeans in the boiling water.   Use tongs to put the jeans in the boiling water.   Let them soak for 20 to 30 minutes as the water continues to boil.   Do not cover the stockpot as it continues to boil and soak your jeans.”

Check periodically to make sure the fabric stays completely under water and if need be, push the jeans under the water from time to time using your tongs.   I keep repeating myself about the tongs but do not want anyone to get themselves burned  accidently.

4.   Dry your jeans in the dryer.   Common sense tells you that you need a large pan or some item to put the hot wet jeans to carry them to the dryer.

I have not had to use this way but am sure you can find a container to take the jeans to your dryer.

So the directions for this step:  Remove your jeans from the boiling water and take them to the dryer immediately.

Turn the dryer to the highest heat setting possible and dry your jeans completely.  Please do not dry too long.

The intense heat of the dryer will further tighten the fibers already tightened by the hot bubbling hot water from the stockpot.

Make sure you use the tongs to handle the jeans since they will be very hot.  (When you get as old as I am you will repeat directions several times.  ugh! )

The ironing way

Wash your jeans in hot water either by your washing machine or by boiling them.
Using your washing machine will allow you wash your jeans as you shrink them while boiling your jeans is faster.      http://www,wikihow.com:  Creative-Commons August 13, 2016)

The boiling method is also slightly more flexible.   If you wanted to shrink just a portion of your jeans, like the waistband or your legs, you could put under only that part into the boiling water.

Hold in place using the tongs.

If using the washing machine method, add detergent as usual with a little liquid fabric softener.  Dark Woolite is good for dark jeans in my opinion.                                                                 wash-268090_640Make sure the water is hot for either method.
Put your jeans into the dryer and dry them until they are damp, but not soaked.   Set the dryer on the highest heat setting.

This is especially important if you used the boiling water or if the washing machine did not put your jeans through the spin cycle.

Your jeans must be still wet, but not dripping wet.  You could spin them in the washing machine until dry enough to put in the dryer. Spin a little; not let it rain.

Iron the jeans until dry.   Place you damp jeans on the ironing board and iron your jeans until dry.   Use a moderate heating setting.

This may not shrink the jeans as much as the other ways Wiki how described but it can be effective if you only need a slight adjustment.”    http://www,wikihow.com:  Creative-Commons August 13, 2016)

My favorite way is shown here.   I will give you advice on the Product Review from the page above in order to share and avoid a negative result with hanging  jeans on the clothesline or with any other possible ones. 501 Levi jeans are an investment in good fashion.
